Port of the Americas

A Strategically Located Container Port


Puerto Rico occupies a privileged geographic position along the Mona Passage, an important shipping route between the Atlantic Ocean and the Panama Canal. Port of the Americas will have the capacity to serve Post-Panamax and Panamax vessels and will serve as a world-class international transshipment port for carrying out value-added activities.


Phase I and Phase II Completed
  • The Port of the Americas currently measures 1,200 feet (366 m), has a new 100 foot (30 m) dock, a 50-foot (15 m) berth and a container terminal with an annual capacity of 250,000 TEUs.
Phase III: is currently under construction and will include the expansion of the container terminal and access and utilities infrastructure

Investment

  • $22.7 MM in two Super Post-Panamax Cranes
  • $210 MM already invested in developing the Port of the Americas
  • $250 MM planned total public investment
  • $500 MM in private investment that might include subsidization of:
    • Expansion, operation and maintenance of the Port of the Americas
    • 1,350 acres of value-added zones in proximity to the Port of the Americas
Economic Impact
  • 350 jobs with the opening of the port
  • 15,000 direct and indirect jobs
  • $6 B economic impact during the first five years of operation
  • Aimed at attracting leading global corporations looking to take advantage of available incentives for Value-Added Zones
