Science City

Science is the Key to Progress

That’s why we’re building a city dedicated to that end.

The Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust has become a catalyst for economic development in Puerto Rico by providing and supporting programs, capital, and infrastructure that supports research and the commercialization of research.

As the Trust’s flagship initiative, the Knowledge Corridor seeks to create a “Science City” in the heart of San Juan. It will encompass over 11 million square feet of highly specialized laboratories, facilities and biotechnology resources.

At its center is the former Oso Blanco State Penitentiary, a structure that will be remodeled into multipurpose facility. Built in the early 1930s, the building stands as a prominent national historic landmark and is protected under the mandate of the federal National Register of Historic Buildings. As such, the structure will be preserved and refurbished to house state-of-the-art scientific research facilities. It will also help connect existing institutions such as the University of Puerto Rico - Río Piedras campus, its Medical Sciences Campus, the city’s Medical Center, and the UPR Botanical Garden, with future institutions at this time under construction such as the UPR/MD Anderson Comprehensive Cancer Center and the UPR Biomolecular Sciences Laboratory.

Science City presents a unique opportunity to position Puerto Rico at the forefront of science, technology and research and development.
