World-Class Infrastructure

The secret to a successful country is to have everyone well connected. Through its highway systems, power grids, and state-of-the-art data channels, Puerto Rico is positioned to offer the very best.

Ground Transportation - A Modern Transportation Network

More than 24,000 miles of highway make all points on Puerto Rico no more than two hours from any airport or seaport on the island. In addition, an efficient mass transit system, known as "Tren Urbano", interconnects the San Juan metro area.

Puerto Rico has an extensive road system with a main freeway crossing the north side from San Juan to Arecibo, and another one linking San Juan to Ponce that crosses the central east side from the north to the south coasts. Another important freeway goes from San Juan to Canóvanas in the northeast.

Airports - World-Class Air Service

Puerto Rico’s air access is by far the best in the Caribbean.  Puerto Rico has eleven airports servicing residents and visitors. The island has three major airports with direct service to the U.S. mainland.  The San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) serves as the regional hub, receiving upwards of 8 million passengers a year.  It handles 4,300 cargo flights per month and over 1,800 weekly flights from more than 20 airlines from worldwide destinations. It provides direct service to more than 20 cities and many international destinations in the Caribbean, North America, South America, and Europe.  This has established Puerto Rico as the Caribbean gateway to North and South America and Europe.  Typical flight time from Miami to San Juan is under three hours, while it takes approximately four hours to fly direct from New York City.

Puerto Rico's two other international airports are Mercedita Airport (PSE), located on the south side of the island in Ponce, and Rafael Hernandez Airport (BQN), which is located on the west side of the island in Aguadilla and serves as an air cargo hub.

In addition, International carriers such as FedEx, UPS, DHL and Airborne, as well as the United States Postal Service, offer airfreight services, including next day door-to-door service.

Seaports - State-of-the-Art Port Facilities

San Juan has the largest cruise ship harbor in the Eastern Caribbean and it stands as the main harbor for several cruise ship companies. This busy seaport services 1.2 million cruise ship passengers per year from well-known cruise ship companies such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Costa, Seabourn and Windstar.

Considering Puerto Rico is only 3 to 4 days away from most locations on the East Coast and 10 days from the West Coast of the United States, and just two weeks from Europe, it is easy to understand the value of its strategic location.

Abundant Electricity and Water

Puerto Rico has a state-of-the-art power grid which is managed by the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA). It features a diversified generating capacity of 5,538 megawatts and is capable of providing business users a dependable electric power source. Currently, major projects are under way to transition to sustainable energy sources and reduce the island's dependence on oil.

PREPA customers who qualify under Puerto Rico’s economic incentives law are entitled to a tax credit ranging from 3% to 10% of the value of their payments to PREPA.

The Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) operates nearly 10,000 miles of water mains and aqueducts and provides waste treatment facilities throughout the island. The quality of water in Puerto Rico meets rigorous U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards.

PRASA service rates vary depending on use and diameter of the water meter. Most industrial facilities are connected to a 2-inch water meter.
